A Healthy Balance

After reading Erin’s (The Healthy Apron) lovely post on moderation, I just knew I had to elaborate on my own personal views. Moderation was something I used to struggle with each and every day.

I went through many years of the same backwards mentality in which eating one unhealthy item led me to throw away the rest of the day’s eating as well.

It was my “all-or-none” mentality at work. It’s that little voice that says: ‘you already ate that [insert junk food of choice], you might as well just have an off-day.

Well, what the heck is an ‘off-day’ anyway?

In my current world, there are no off-days, at least pertaining to food! Off-days with my mood? Of course! But food off-days are for diets.

These days I subscribe to an all around healthy lifestyle, which involves a whole lot of healthy with a side of indulgence. Case in point: chocolate chip banana blondies.

Two years ago, I would have deemed yesterday an off-day after eating those blondies. All healthy eating would be out and I’d just eat junk all day. Luckily, I’ve realized that that type of thought process is what kept me from being successful for so long.

I usually eat something sweet or indulgent every single day. If I let that one food item determine the rest of the day’s eating—then every day would be filled with junk!

Each day, I strive to the do the best that I can do, and that includes enjoying treats. Enjoy a blondie and move on.

No longer do I feel that “all-or-none” tug. Sure, it’s there and infrequently rears it’s ugly head—but now I have the tools to deal with it.

It all comes down to one of my favorite words: BALANCE.

Do you have an ‘all-or-none’ mentality when it comes to healthy eating?

I assure you that once you adopt a life geared towards general health and well-being, balance becomes just another part of your every day habits. It simply comes naturally and you don’t even have to think about.

I tend to eat certain foods for a long period of time and then all of a sudden I forget about them!

Well, I totally forgot about smoothies in a bowl (SIAB, if you will). Last summer I would eat these a few times a week!


Into the blender:

  • frozen kiwi
  • frozen banana
  • frozen strawberries
  • spinach
  • 1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior protein
  • unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 t. each guar gum & xanthan gum (thickeners)

Topped with:

  • wheat germ
  • Love Crunch granola
  • cacao nibs

Yum! This served as a great post-run snack!

Lately, I’ve also been obsessed with this snack bowl that combines sweet and savory. <—my favorite combo!

This has been my night time snack for the past week:

  • roasted pine nut hummus + cowboy mix
  • laughing cow wedge + apple butter
  • crackers for dipping

I’m almost out of the cowboy mix, so expect to see a recreation! I bought it at Costco and it’s so good! I’ve also been throwing it on top of veggie bowls.

Alright friends, it’s time to get cracking on my to-do list!
