When I don’t work out for a few days, I start feeling really sluggish. I truly start to feel a drastic change in my energy levels and in turn, my motivation.
Basically (in my case), laziness breeds more laziness. Let me explain.
When I’m not active for 2 or 3 days in a row, I become even less likely to work out on that 3rd or 4th day. That’s not to say that I always allow laziness to breed more laziness—after all working out is a conscious choice that I have to make.
I can usually give myself a swift kick in the booty and get back on it. Key word – usually. Sometimes that’s just not the case.
It’s the days where I wake up feeling blah (for lack of a better word) that I really realize the power of exercise-induced endorphins. When I haven’t gotten those endorphins flowing for a few days, I wake up groggy and tired.
On the contrary, if I worked out the day before, I wake up feeling energized and ready to power through the day. It’s almost as if the previous day’s endorphins overflow into the next day. How awesome is that?
If you couldn’t tell, I’m coming off of one of those too many rest days in a row phases.
It’s a cycle – less working out leads to lowered energy levels which leads to even less motivation. My inner lazy girl comes out and I revert back to those pre-weight loss days.
When I say pre-weight loss days, I’m referring to the way I felt during that time rather than to how much I weighed. I’ll be honest, my inner lazy girl ruled back then. I knew what I needed to be doing but for some reason I just couldn’t muster up the motivation to actually get out there and do it.
My inner lazy girl took over my time, day after day.
These days, she only makes an appearance every so often. The difference is that now I know just how to shut her up.

Let someone know that I’m feeling lazy. If I tell my brother/Mom/Dad/sister/Sam/friends, that I’m feeling lazy then they can remind me of how great I feel when I’m energized! A work out buddy keeps me accountable.
Drink some coffee. Sometimes, I just need that extra caffeine boost. Especially, when I wake up feeling sluggish. I’m not saying that I rely on caffeine to get me through the day – but it certainly helps on those lazy girl days.

Put on my workout clothes and JUST DO IT! I’ll tell you this – I’ve never regretted a workout. Most of the time, if I start a workout I’ll finish it.
9 times out of 10, one of these techniques works for me. Actually, a combination is usually the way to go.
New tunes + a work out buddy + getting in my work out clothes means a work out is going to happen.
Kapow! Take that inner lazy girl!
Now I’m all motivated and ready to run tonight!
