Hello, New Healthy readers! My name's Leanne, I'm a Holistic Nutritionist and writer for my health blog, Healthful Pursuit. I'm so excited to be hanging out with you today!
You're probably wondering how you can have a healthy breakfast with cheesecake and cookie dough. Doesn't sound all that healthy, does it?
Well, technically it's not, but we can give unhealthy food a makeover so that it becomes beneficial for our bodies while making sure it still tastes fantastic.
It's a win, win! What better place for us to start than with breakfast? It wasn't long after I began blogging that I realized I love creating, writing, eating, and taking pictures of breakfasts.
From microwaved cakes,
and banana puddings...
I'll take it all! Our parents had something right when they told us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
It gets our metabolism revving, gives us the boost of energy we need to get our day started, and gives our brain the fuel it needs to stay on top of our game.
But what breakfast is the right breakfast, you ask?
It depends on a lot of factors, but generally, the best breakfast is a liquid one.
Or at least the best 'first breakfast' as I like to call it [followed up with something solid an hour or two later].
You know that feeling you get when you wake up and you're not really sure what day it is or what you're supposed to be doing? Just as our mind needs a couple of moments to wake up, our tummies do too.
That's why the best breakfast you can give yourself is something that will be digested easily to begin your day softly.
Although I'd love to spend hours creating an outstanding breakfast every morning, I just don't have that luxury and I'm sure many of you don't either.
That's why I started making sleepy smoothies. They...
- Can replace a meal
- Are ready in under 1 minute
- Pack a strong nutritious punch
- Are inexpensive
- Are a fantastic delivery system. In today's smoothies we have:
- chia seed - the wonder seed for supporting a regular + healthy digestive system
- oats - beneficial B vitamins + helps to lower cholesterol + high in manganese
- strawberries - high in fiber + antioxidants
- cacao - supports brain health + muscle relaxation
- Are easily digested
So without further adieu, let's get down to sleepy smoothie business.
Sleepy Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothie
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1 cup non-dairy milk – I used unsweetened almond milk
- 3 tbsp uncontaminated oats
- 1 tbsp chia seed
- 1 tbsp cashews
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- Pinch stevia
To be made the night before you plan on eating it, or at least 4 hours in advance.
Combine all ingredients in a glass container [I like to use a mason jar and give it a quick shake] and place in the fridge overnight. In the morning, pour ingredients into blender and process until smooth.
Top with cashews + strawberries.
Sleepy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Smoothie
- 1 cup non-dairy milk + 1/4 cup for blending – I used unsweetened almond milk
- 6 tbsp uncontaminated oats
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1 tbsp cacao powder

If you're feeling really crazy, you can make both smoothies and create your very own verrine!Sleepy Cookie Dough Cheesecake Verrine
- 1 Sleepy Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothie
- 1 Sleepy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Smoothie
Prepare smoothies as directed above, then layer in 2 tall glasses. Makes 2 servings.
These babies are great the next day too. Have one verrine today, another verrine tomorrow. Verrine…it’s such a beautiful word, no? Makes me want to eat verrines everyday, just so I can say it more!

So there you have it, three new ways to simplify your breakfast experience, all with ingredients that will support your health and keep your body running smoothly throughout your hectic day!
Was breakfast part of your families routine when you were a kid? What was your favorite breakfast back then? Breakfast was so important to my family! I loved Cheerios + skim milk. We also had a lot of oatmeal + brown sugar.
What breakfasts do you rely on when you're on the go? This one's an easy one for me... smoothies!
Have you ever had smoothie in a bowl? I know how much Stefanie likes her smoothies in a bowl, so I gave it a shot. If you haven't had smoothies in a bowl, you must try it, it's so satisfying!
