First off, don’t forget to enter my Ancient Grains Granola Giveaway! It ends on Thursday!
Let’s talk beauty. Specifically beauty products for the face.
For the past 6 or 7 years, I have used Proactiv Solution religiously! Day and night. It has always kept my acne-prone skin in great condition. Which, of course, is why I stuck to the regimen.
However, for the past few months my skin has been breaking out like crazy! And the Proactiv just hasn’t helped one bit. In fact, it’s probably worsened the problem!
I can only assume that my skin somehow got used to the product and so it stopped working it’s magic. On the other hand, maybe my skin is just maturing and it’s time to change it up.
Either way, it’s a bummer!
I have nothing but good words for Proactiv, but unfortunately it’s just not cutting it anymore.
Insert: research on all types of face wash!
I have been looking for a natural face wash devoid of harsh chemicals (like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide) and holy cow is it overwhelming!
I finally just went into Sephora today, which really only served to make my decision more difficult!
There are SO many products that promise they’ll clear your acne and give you flawless skin. But, everyone’s skin is different. So how do I find what works for me?
Well, samples of course! Thank you Sephora!
Seeing that I couldn’t choose, the beauty consultant offered to give me a few samples from a line of my choice. That way I could try it out for a week or so and then decide whether I wanted to buy the full-size bottles.
If by chance I didn’t like the product, then I could get samples of something else! Sounds pretty great, right? ![]()
My first choice? Boscia.
You don't want preservatives in your food, so why would you want them in your skincare? Boscia knows that chemical preservatives in skincare can cause a variety of skin irritations from eczema to blemishes to rashes—and wants to make sure your skin isn't a victim. Boscia is one of the world's first preservative-free, botanically-based skincare lines. This revolutionary Japanese brand creates some of the most innovative anti-aging and skin-purifying products—free of chemicals and full of the finest botanicals. Preserve your skin with their preservative-free assortment and boost your glow forever.
Sounds good to me! Only time will tell!
Products I scored:
Have you used Boscia products? If so, what did you think?
Any other face wash recommendations for acne-prone skin?
Somehow I ended up at Panera after finishing up at Sephora. How’d that happen? ![]()
The usual: You pick 2--Black Bean Soup + Fuji Apple Salad (minus chicken) + Whole Wheat Baguette
The unusual: Pumpkin shortbread cookies (!!) + M & M Cookie to share
Well I’m off to write a paper and squeeze in a work-out!
Have a great night guys!
<3 Stefanie

You should try Origins Never a Dull Moment Facewash! Its less irritating to the skin than Proactiv and it smells amazing. If you have an Origins (usually sold at Macys) they will give you samples, they're wonderful about that! I used to use proactiv, then switched :)
I like to use Trilogy or Simple. I am not sure if you can buy these in the states, but, I find they are really good products. If I had to pick on though, I prefer to use the Simple Products, although Trilogy do have a great Rose Hip Oil.
They are all natural and don't test on Animals.
I went through the SAME issues after using Proactiv for the past 5+ years (and after entering my 30s my skin completely changed or I got "used" it it??. I went back to using a great brand called Dermalogica this past year and stopped using anything with chemicals (i.e. Salicylic Acid/Benzoyl Peroxide). I HIGHLY recommend the Dermal Clay Cleanser. I have fair skinned and freckles but this seems to control oil and still is sensitive. I also use their Multi-Active Toner (daily) and Daily Microfoliant (I use twice a week) and then just Oil of Olay moisturizer (day and night). Dermalogica also has their own moisturizer, which is amazing as well.
As far as "spot treatments" I have been using Burt Bee's Herbal Blemish Stick (you can get it at Target/Walgreens/CVS, etc.) and has kept my skin pretty much spotless for the last 8 months!
I buy it from www.whatgreatskin.com. Also, dermalogica is a brand that most spas use for facials..if you check out their site, you could find a local retailer, where ever you are. This website also has travel kits you could try..I highly recommend trying it.
Hope this helps! I have been enjoying your blog!

Ooh the baked goodies look great! I used to use Proactiv religiously as well, but when I moved to the Middle East it got way too expensive to ship and I'd always have to stock up every time I came back to Canada. Eventually I went on Accutane and although it gave me dry lips like nobody's business, it worked. I was on it for about a year I think, and although I still get breakouts occasionally, I can usually attribute them to stress. Can't wait to hear what happens with your new products though! :D
@eatontherun Thanks for the recommendation! I've never used Origins but sounds like something I'd love! Esp. if they offer samples! I hate buying full-size products if I don't know whether I'll like them! :)
@onehungrymonster I've never seen Trilogy or Simple in the States, but I'm going to do some research on it! Thanks!! :)
@Darci Wow! Seriously thank you, thank you!
I have heard of Dermalogica from searching for skincare products that work!
I looked at their website and there are a few local retailers that sell it! YAY! The dermal clay cleanser sounds great!
Again thank you for your very thorough recommendation! That was SO helpful! :) :)
@eatspinrunrepeat You lived in the Middle East? When, where? Details!! My bf is from the Middle East (Syria), so I'd LOVE to hear about your experiences there!!
Maybe all my baked goods have something to do with my skin problems! ;)
Accutane is on my list as a last resort.
Stefanie, I hope it helped. I will trade my skin knowledge for your cooking skills! I actually have some Dermalogica samples I could send you if you can't get any from local stores. The site I buy it from is very generous on samples. I don't have the dermal clay cleanser but a different cleanser sample, some masques, boosters and the microfoliant. My email is darci.chamberlain@gmail.com if you are interested.
